🎵 New Episode Alert: Inside the World of Henryk Mikolaj Górecki – Legacy, Artistry, and Collaboration
A Conversation with Jarred Dunn and Anna Górecka on The Piano Pod
What does it mean to step inside the creative world of one of the twentieth century’s most profound yet overlooked musical voices??
What does it truly take to carry a legacy forward, not through imitation, but through living artistry?
In this rare and intimate episode of The Piano Pod, I am honored to welcome two extraordinary guests: Jarred Dunn, internationally acclaimed pianist, Yamaha Artist, and researcher, and Anna Górecka, renowned concert pianist, professor, and the daughter of the legendary Polish composer Henryk Mikolaj Górecki.
Together, they open a window that few listeners ever get to glimpse, offering an inside look into the emotional, historical, and personal world behind their upcoming album, Górecki’s World of Piano—a project that pays tribute to the profound, often-overlooked piano works of Górecki.
A Personal Encounter with Górecki's Music
Górecki's music has held a special place in my heart for over two decades. More than twenty years ago, while visiting a friend's home, she introduced me to Górecki's Symphony No. 3 — the "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs." I still vividly remember the CD cover: muted colors, an image that seemed suspended between grief and hope. The moment the music started, I was utterly taken aback. I had never encountered anything like it before. The raw emotion, the simplicity, the weight of the silence between phrases — it was a revelation.
Fast forward to today, and it feels profoundly moving to now introduce you to another side of Górecki's artistry: his piano music. Pieces that, though lesser known, carry the same intensity, depth, and humanity as his symphonic masterpieces.
The Heart of Górecki’s Legacy
Henryk Mikolaj Górecki (1933–2010) is best known for his Symphony No. 3, but his contributions extend far beyond a single work. His early career explored avant-garde and serialist languages, as evident in works such as the First Symphony and Five Pieces for Two Pianos. Over time, his style evolved into an emotional minimalism that incorporated Polish folk music, sacred themes, and a profound reflection on human suffering and resilience.
Though Górecki's piano music remains largely undiscovered by mainstream audiences, it offers profound insight into his creative soul. Pieces such as the Sonata, Op. 6, Four Preludes, Op. 1, and Moments Musicaux reveal a composer capable of crafting architecture and silence, as well as force and vulnerability, in equal measure. In the upcoming album Górecki's World of Piano, Jarred and Anna illuminate this vast, rich terrain, giving voice to works that have remained largely hidden from public view.
A Meeting of Minds — And Generations
Our conversation unfolds the extraordinary story behind the album: a young pianist, Jarred Dunn, who moved from Canada to Poland to study with Anna Górecka after being deeply moved by Górecki’s music; a legendary teacher who recognized not only talent but vision; and a bond that grew from mentorship into true artistic collaboration.
Together, they describe the joy, intensity, and challenges of recording these pieces, including world-premiere recordings of unpublished works, and how their journey together transformed them as musicians and human beings.
What It Means to Be a Classical Musician
One of the most potent themes that emerged in our conversation was this: being a musician is not about personal ambition, trophies, or self-glorification. It is not about being seen.
It is about sharing the gift of music — selflessly, honestly, and generously.
It is about celebrating the fullness of humankind — our joys, our sorrows, our endless search for meaning.
It is about contributing to history: leaving behind our own small but precious legacy, knowing that while our time on earth is short, the impact of art can echo across generations.
Music is a thread that connects us to those who came before and to those who will come after. Through their artistry, Jarred and Anna embody this spirit: serving something larger than themselves, honoring tradition while breathing new life into it.
Final Reflections
This episode is not just about the making of a beautiful new album.
It is about living with music as a way of being.
It is about mentorship evolving into collaboration.
It is about honoring legacy — not by repeating the past, but by letting it guide and inspire new creation.
If you are a musician, educator, or music lover searching for a reminder of why we dedicate ourselves to this art, you won’t want to miss this conversation.
