How I Conduct Meaningful, Engaging Interviews
After interviewing some of the most brilliant minds in the music world for nearly 5 years, I’ve developed an approach that makes my conversations feel insightful, engaging, and natural—not just a list of questions. Here’s how I do it:
1️⃣ Preparation & Research
I don’t just Google my guests—I have them fill out a carefully curated form that helps shape the episode.
I analyze their bio, read articles, and check their social media to find what truly drives them.
I avoid listening to too many past interviews so I don’t form biases.
2️⃣ Engagement & Active Listening
I create a space where guests feel heard and valued—I listen without judgment and remain genuinely curious.
I structure the interview, but I let the conversation flow naturally.
3️⃣ Unique Questioning Style
I avoid cliché and surface-level questions.
I ask about their passion, purpose, and beliefs—not just their career timeline.
I stay away from “Googleable” info and read between the lines.
4️⃣ Balancing My Personal Presence
I guide the conversation, but I keep my speaking to about 5-10% of the interview.
I react naturally while allowing my guests to shine.
5️⃣ Flow & Storytelling
I make sure my interviews feel like a conversation, not an interrogation.
I transition smoothly by connecting my next question to what my guest said.
If a guest shares something profound, I stay on that topic and dig deeper.
6️⃣ Handling Challenges
If a guest seems disengaged, I ask more compelling questions and pivot as needed.
When handling controversial topics, I listen, empathize, and stay neutral—it’s about their story, not my opinion.
Being an excellent interviewer isn’t about asking the “right” questions—it’s about making your guest feel heard, creating space for meaningful dialogue, and being flexible at the moment.
